When clicking a placemark, the popup displays the HTML from the placemark field "Addition HTML Text"
Our popups show several links. The first one is highlighted.. See attachment.
How can we suppress the first link from being highlighted? So, no links are selected?

Check CSS style, applied to your link. It is due your template.
After that add override CSS style for popup content class and link tag at the end of your template
