Yes, I don't understand too.
Table for maptypes I was created only in 2.8.1. And this release was not published.
It was: 2.7.7
Then: 2.8.5.

I figured it out!!!
You see somewhere along the way on the first try, there was an issue - not sure what that issue was, but the updater was able to write some data to the DB and create the new tables.
When the updates failed, I deleted the home directory, restored from Akeeba. Akeeba did not know about the new tables so it did not drop them, rather it dropped only the ones it knew about and restored the data. So in essence the jos_zhgooglemaps_maptypes was there when Akeeba restored already, so when I ran the updater again, the updater didn't know how to deal with that.
I simply went into DB, dropped all tables, restored from Akeeba, then shut off caching, cleared both system and update caches and updated. It went just fine.
Thank you for the quick response! I really appreciate your dedication. Hopefully this may help someone else in the future as well!
Ciao!

Additional info - I really figured out why..
you see, I test all updates on a beta server. This is the beta install that has been failing.
Since I previously upgraded on the beta server, some tables and some columns were there - again, because Akeeba backup did not drop all tables, all lit did was replace the ones it knew about.
So the solution for those that constantly use a beta environment that is wiped and restored, wipe all tables manually first.
Thanks again!
