I found I could embed each overlay image within a KML file and display them separately. No opacity control, but oh well...

Hi
Yes, you can control all overlays by setting opacity control.
And for managing by group list - placemarks, paths and KML files (defined by paths).
I thought that managing by ground overlays is not good idea ( it is rare case) I didn't implement for it, only show it and manage opacity
