One question.
Do you expect to have full hierarchy? I mean more than one category level.
For example
- Min
-- 2019
--- fly1
--- fly 2
-- 2018
--- fly 1
- Aman
-- 2019
--- fly 1
-- 2018
--- fly 1

Where Bird and Year are category and Fly is group for bird fly

Or you will do like
- Min
-- 2019
-- 2018
- Aman
-- 2019
-- 2018

This is rather of no importance for you, as I can name my group "2019" and the category "Min" or the other way round.
What matters is the availability of having categories and subcategories.
So yes, I would love the "category" feature where I could specify "parent category" for this category. I do not know whether you are limited to the number of subcategories by the programming language or any other factor.
My dream would be having the possibility of selecting something like year - season - species - inividuals(so 3 categories and the path). With the possibility of selecting/deselecting any category on the map.

Due to my current release works with groups my plans are
1 - create category list of groups without hierarchy, ie

- category 1
-- group 1
-- group 2
-- group 3
- category 2
-- group 4
-- group 5

2 - After that I will do category list with hierarchy
- category 1
-- subcategory 1
---- group 1
---- group 2
-- subcategory 2
---- subcategory 2.1

---

group 3
- category 2
-- group 4
-- group 5

In any case management will be by groups but you can easy click on category to select all details
